Get good quality sound gear: Having the right DJ gear will mean the difference between being a success and a failure. Imagine playing a gig, everyone is dancing and suddenly your decks cut out! Having the right DJ gear will enhance your ability and confidence. Don’t buy cheap gear because you are impatient to start out. Save up for a few more months and buy high quality equipment.

Go for the complete set up: A party may have a fantastic music but it is not only the music that matters. It is the atmosphere. Create the right atmosphere by investing in some proper lighting equipment. Laser lights, mirror balls, spot lights and LED lighting will work at almost any event.

Throw your own parties: Organising a party for your family and friends means that you will have a safe environment to practise your DJ skills. You will all have a great time and you will have gained some experience.

Practise lots: Nothing will ever be able to take the place of practise. There is no shortcut when it comes to being a DJ. If you are serious about becoming a professional DJ you need to make sure you are in it for the long haul. Set aside time to practise with your decks every single day.

Be open when it comes to music style: Just because you like a song it doesn’t mean that everyone else will. Don’t get stuck in a rut with your music collection. Get out to some local gigs and parties and see what other DJ’s are playing. Certain songs will really stir a crowd up and others will clear the dance floor in seconds.

1. DJ Turntable

A turn table is one of the most basic things that any DJ will need. Turntables are sometimes called ‘decks’ and are usually for playing vinyl records. There are two main types of turntables; belt drive and direct drive. Belt drive turntables use a motor and a pulley system. When the table is on the rubber belt turns the pulley and causes the platter to spin. Direct drive turntables use a number of gears to turn the platter and thus play the record. The platter can be sped up or slowed down to change the tempo of the record being played.

2. Headphones

Another essential piece of DJ Gear is a good pair of headphones. DJ’s will cue songs (basically put them in on a list to be played) and as the previous track comes to an end the cued track will begin to play in the DJ’s earphones. He can then decide exactly where to bring the next song in without the audience having to listen to any poor overlap.

3. Microphone

Any good DJ will be able to build a rapport with his crowd. They only way of communicating to them and being heard is to use a microphone. The banter the DJ has with the crowd will help build the rapport and the atmosphere that is needed. The DJ may receive requests and shout outs and he can use the microphone to communicate these to his audience. Any karaoke DJ will have a number of high quality mics for the singers to use.
